Synopsis

The DVD synopsis, just because it's so damn brilliant:

At the same time that a mysterious meteorite drops from space, women are being discovered murdered all over japan with holes in them and containing alien semen. The government uses passion-filled hormones to lure the monster into a trap, but the monster becomes more powerful than ever. At that moment as total annihilation looms, a giant Venus comes to the rescue.

Review

Before I start on the main review, I want to say that this isn't just me watching another hentai. You see, I was approached at work one day by an acquaintance who had heard good words about anime and its rapidly rising popularity in Norway. Deciding to give anime a shot, he bought two titles on the recommendation of the store clerk. This was one of them, and the other was Alien from the Darkness.

In other words, my friend got one of the worst first impressions of anime imaginable. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Mission of Darkness represents the general "quality" of just about any tentacle hentai out there. For one, the art is distinctively pedestrian and the animation is pretty much a joke. It's not as bad as the one I remember from Sailor and the Seven Ballz, but we're not talking about much of an improvement here. The VAs do an average job, at least as far as I can tell. That the script is written by hormonally imbalanced morons is hardly the voice actors' fault.

So, with that out of the way, allow me to describe the helpings of utter nonsense you get from watching this. You see, a penis-shaped ship slowly cruises towards earth, shooting out a red orb from the head front. Meanwhile, people are having sex in a park near (or in -- I couldn't tell) a Japanese city. Having withessed the "shooting stars", they are nevertheless interrupted by the explosion as the red orb lands. (Again, I have no idea whether it landed in the park or outside the city. The editing didn't exactly give that away, so I guess it wasn't important.)

In the meantime, in the institute of "female professors who likes their lab coats a few sizes too small", the large-breasted professor Fujiko is studying alien sperm. From here on and out, the script gets filled with the kind of nonsense that is half elementary biology and half made-up crap. It's all very scientific and stupid, and serves only as a reason why Mr. Giant Godzilla-penis roams around raping women.

While all this is going on, some green-haired woman also enters the scene. After literally screwing the life out of two dumbasses, she heads out to find said tentacle rape monster. Having learned about the military plans to deal with the monster via TV, she takes (or steals for all I know) a car and drives outside of town.

You see, the military plan was simply to hire every callgirl, hooker, exotic dancer or any other fairly attractive (by this title's standards) woman and round them up outside town. Then, they -- as told by the magnificent summary on the DVD -- spray the entire area with pheromones to attract the intergalactic rapist. Are you with me so far?

Anyway, I'm sure you're over and beside yourself with surprise when I tell you that, yes... it turns into a big orgie that doesn't even get interrupted when the penis monster (now bigger than Godzilla ever was) BURSTS FROM THE GROUND, grabs several women and staples them on himself as if they were human post-it notes with breasts. And just as you think this title can't make any less sense......

..... along comes "Venus." She drives in, delivers her speech and grows to a size equal to said tentacle/penis monster. She does Kekkou Kamen's trademark "attack jump with legs spread wide" and proceeds to impale herself on one of the monster's tentacles and -- again -- reducing the target of her vigorous sex into a mummified version of itself.

And that was the end of it. I must admit I laughed at the immense stupidity this OAV showcased at times, but that doesn't change the fact that this title is a piece of crap and should be avoided like the plague it is. I lent my friend my Interstella 5555 DVD in an effort to repair any damage done to his first impression on anime. And if any of you is offered this title as your very first anime by some dumbass store clerk, punch the guy in the face. He damn well deserves it.

Even though I got a few cheap laughs out of this title, I don't have the conscience to give it two stars because it doesn't deserve two stars. — Stig Høgset

Recommended Audience: Sex and tentacle rape makes it an adult only venture. From what I understand, the US edit has a few more scenes included, like the raping of a woman, showing how her stomach grows like she was pregnant and then bursting. I'm glad I didn't get to see those scenes.
